In musical terms, a backstage is the place where musicians get ready to go on stage for their show; a so-called front stage. Sociologist Erving Goffman used the backstage-front stage phenomenon for his sociological theory. To him, the front stage is the place where you play your role in a certain social setting. Every time you leave a social setting and are all by yourself, you can distance yourself from your role and come to yourself. To me, it’s the ideal place where you can reflect on yourself and improve yourself, before you go back to a front stage and play your role.

Een backstage heeft meerdere betekenissen. Allereerst is het een verwijzing naar alles wat achter de coulissen gebeurt. De plek waar muzikanten, artiesten en acteurs zich klaarmaken om het podium op te gaan. Om op het podium een rol te spelen en een show te geven. Socioloog Erving Goffman (1922-1982) heeft deze terminologie gebruikt voor zijn sociologische theorie over de dramaturgie van de samenleving. Volgens hem is de samenleving een rollenspel, waarin mensen in elke sociale situatie een andere rol spelen, afhankelijk van de aanwezige personen. Mensen proberen hierin zelf te regisseren hoe ze overkomen op anderen (het publiek), wat kan worden gedaan door de manier waarop iemand zich kleedt, praat of gedraagt.
De rol die je aanneemt kan zowel een echte als een onechte rol zijn. Dit hangt af van de manier waarop iemand zich voordoet en of dit overeenkomt met hoe die persoon ook daadwerkelijk is; oftewel in hoeverre de rol authentiek is. In de zogenaamde front stage moet een persoon altijd een rol spelen, maar in de backstage kan de persoon afstand doen van zijn of haar rol en tot zichzelf komen.
De backstage is voor mij dan ook de ideale plek om tot jezelf te komen, op jezelf te reflecteren en te kijken hoe je de rollen die je speelt nog beter kan spelen. Een rol die steeds meer overeenkomt met hoe je daadwerkelijk bent. Elke keer dat je opnieuw de backstage bezoekt, heb je de mogelijkheid om je rol steeds beter te ontwikkelen.

The word backstage has several meanings. First of all, it’s a reference to everything that happens behind the stage. A place where musicians, artists and actors prepare to take the stage, where they play a role and give a show. Sociologist Erving Goffman (1922-1982) used this terminology for his sociological theory about the dramaturgy of society. According to him, society is a role play, where people play a different role in every social setting, depending on the other persons present. People try to direct the way they come across other people (the audience). That can be done through the way someone dresses, talks or behaves.
The role someone plays can be either a real role or a fake role. This depends on whether the role someone plays corresponds to the way someone really is; it depends on how authentic the role is. Someone has to play a role when they are on the so called front stage, but they’re able to distance themselves from the role and come to themselves when they’re in the backstage.
To me the backstage is the ideal place to come to yourself, to reflect on yourself and to see how you can improve the way you’re playing your role. A role that increasingly corresponds to how you really are. You’re able to develop your role every time you revisit the backstage.
